The original fukyūgata were introduced in 1941 as basic and standard kata to be practiced across Okinawan styles. Fukyūgata Ichi was created by Nagamine Shōshin of Matsubayashi-ryū as representative of Shōrin-ryū. Fukyūgata Ni was contributed by Miyagi Chōjun as representative of Gōjū-ryū, where it's known as Gekisai Dai Ichi. In 2019, Fukyūgata San was added from Uechi-ryū, where it's known as Kanshiwa. It was created by Uechi Kanei and his seniors.
